Who is Trent Reznor… NIN Nine Inch Nails ring a bell.  Funny his music appears in some of the Creative Commons Promotional Informational videos.

His video for only is above, remixed by another artist. His attitude toward sharing seems to be a good one, he was commenting about his own work, and obviously has obtained creative commons licenses for his work. Actually his last album was completely free as a download from his site. It was awesome, I like his work, and the quality the same as what Ive previously paid to get on CD. His generosity baffles me a bit. But I appreciate it alot. Anyway presently the same people who are remixing his work and uploading to Youtube, dont seem to be tolerating the same in kind attitude. Which seems kinda weird, really. How can you remix, and not expect the same media use from others. Especially on youtube. I love music, and video, ya my partner hates music. Ya its kinda like hating cheesecake, I just dont understand it. So my Web 2.0 experience has mostly been in the pursuit of sound files, ya Im an artist so I still want visuals so youtube has been my perfect happyplace. Yes and video after video complaining about copyright violations, and videos just about copyright violation.

There is one person vlogging about a large media corporation, and his fear that if he views someones uploaded material, that there will be a list of users whos information that can be obtained and shared, if the uploader is in violation of copyrights. Wow if this tracing is true, just think of all the stuff you’ve viewed. Me, well I check those things out clear it with lawyers, and then press the play button. Of course I’m being sarcastic, I just am hoping that what Im viewing is clean in all aspects. Well sometimes music isnt pristine.

So much much politics, in music and art production I think. And yes theres the comments below. Debates, conversations, bad words, name calling. And the flip side enthusiasm, encouragement, sharing, art, music, culture.. Yep the internet brings people together.

Well I’ve heard the scariest sound file ever. Maybe the scariest thing ever. Really I wouldn’t listen to it if I were you. Makes me realize that Web 2.0 can make your computer into Pandora’s Box, you open it up, and suddenly you have all the worlds sickness, and death pouring into your lap. Seriously sickness and death. Don’t open it! Don’t push the link. Stay safe.

Ya not unlike the news on tv, this is an art piece, and I have to remind myself of it. You may see it as something else. Or hear it as something else. Usually sharing is a nice thing to do, this is not. This is what people do with the news they share it. You shouldn’t listen to it.

Now getting me scared is a tall order, Ive seen a lot, wish I hadn’t but I had no choice it the matter. Its not easy to do. Ive listened to details of the murder of six children by their father as I sat drawing him in his blue plaid shirt. It was for a courtroom illustration. We made eye contact as he sat down, I just saw a man, not a monster, I’m not a small child, I also had not trust in him, so no harm would come to me. But this sound file, makes me feel like a hunted bunny, it is terrifying, TERRIFYING!

An artist, I know said this about it…”That is THE most f*cked up thing I’ve EVER heard. For that reason I think it is F*CKING BRILLIANT!” I’m in agreement, I think the piece does what it is meant to. The other comment by another man who is a non artist “F*ck don’t send me that crap….so scary”
Either way…welcome to HELL.

You know I get this odd conflicted feeling about the creative commons idea, I mean, I don’t know. It seems great sharing etc. I just get weirded out by the idea, that copyright protects us somewhat, and somehow the utopian share share thingy seems like it makes us sign our rights away.

You know I want to upload something I like into creative commons, not just some piece Im not happy with, and don’t mind losing control over. But there is fear, I mean really stuff that sits in our portfolios, and in our digital files not used is actually a waste of materials and time so why not toss it like seeds into the wind, and see what grows out of them.

Well I kinda have goth seeds so they will make some odd and twisted plants for sure, blackberry thorn bushes sans-fruit if you will. As I write, the emails come in from that PB wikibot, CityFarming and Urban Agriculture is on my mind! Its funny getting emails, about a wiki, about a website… Ya like a big circular file error.

Dave Gahan actually had something to say about copyright infringment, he said something to the effect that it was like someone going into your pocket and stealing your wallet, that he didnt mind personal use, but that making a channel of someones work was not to his liking. The work that someone had uploaded was not even distributed by Gahan yet, so you could imagine the pain, and financial impact of that.

I’ve had that nervous reaction before, when I realized a young man I passed everyday in Ottawa on the way to work was in fact a neo-nazi, and was on the news after attacking protesters for anti-pregidous assembly, saying he would in fact kick someone in the head again. Nice! Yes I’m being sarcastic. Those red suspenders he wore were a modified swastika, and I was blind to it all. Now the assembly could be safer online, no doc martin boots representing an opinion that was contrary. Maybe the angry exchange of words, like what I see when reading responses to video on youtube.

The responses on youtube ahhh so angry so inappropriate, but so interesting, often more so than the material orginally posted, don’t you find.

Ah yes the talking heads, really I think he must be talking about newscasters, if not lets pretend he is. Yes the way we receive the news has changed, yes the newspaper, television newsbroadcast still exists, but the addition of webnews really has its effect on me, and probally you and the rest of the individuals on the net.

I think the best thing for me has been youtube commentary about the news that is caught by passersby and posted, there is something about reading the written commentaries from the people who experienced the news first hand that gives a much different perspective than the news reporting that we had as the only option it seems not that long ago.

And yes news from different countries and difference sides of wars lends intoself a little more to a clarity of whats going on, I think I was in Ottawa when I heard from my Iranian friend Besnoz a perspective of the Iraq war that I had never heard. I was just so niave and unaware even when I was watching the news. Hey I just watched Jarheads speaking of that, oh man good movie, well if that is just one perspective I guess.

Anyway now because of the net, the web, the web 2.0, we have access to more than the individuals we know in front of us, and the global perspectives of what is going on in our world. I guess yes I’ll have to pull my head out of the sand a little more, ya a reference to my podcast, because it is my daughters world too, I wonder what web 3.0 will look like. Ill see you there okay?

Recently I got an email from someone claiming to be someone hadnt heard from in at least ten years. I actually had to email a list of questions to them to confirm it was in fact them because it was really hard to believe they were back in my life. Ya they passed the quiz thanks, but ya still its hard to believe.

Really they live in a different country, on a different continent, and speak a different language now, but the technology is the same for getting in touch. So many emails and then the addition of skype to the mix has made catching up alot easier.

My question was how did they find me, the answer was my interaction with the web 2.0 site of an association I joined where I left my name and website address. Led them to my homesite, and my email address, and a tentative query if I was the same person they knew from so long ago. Really nice, sweet made me so happy.

There has also been conversation about how that they wish that there had been more internet options when we were younger. Since we are used to the distance of being thousands of miles away from each other, they were in Vancouver and I was in Ottawa, it was more of a discussion of the cost of long distance calling. Really I now think about the wait between letters. Gaaahhhhh so annoying.

Anyway have to talk about the first Skype conversation. Okay it was great, I mean having someones voice on your laptop is so much like talking face to face, it is wicked. Okay I did yell at them, I had to give them serious trouble for disappearing for so long. Dont worry they expected it, and laughed.

Anyway really if there is someone you havent talked to for along time, there is no reason not to do it. The technology is in place its not expensive, and the feedback is almost instant. Go on, send them an email, or give them a call. Don’t wait 10 years.

I hope that the ideas about blogging and emailing at work becomes an accepted practice, how many of us know people in the same field across the country or perhaps the world that when questions about software, etc come up that contacting them would be more effective then say technical support. How effective is getting one answer to something, when many answers or directions could be tapped with in the same time frame, especially when the job is time sensitive.

After reading about the potential, and the experience so far, and what will continue in this class as far as the Web 2.0, how different things will look outside this class. I got into graphic design because I wanted to have fun at work. I do have fun as a designer, but now I want the online gaming kind of fun too. Ya now I’m spoiled, I bet my corporate lawyer friend just wants graphic designer fun. Tee-hee! I hope to create more of that atmosphere for myself now that I am more aware of its existance and its potential to get work done, whether I continue to work for someone else, or work for myself but not by myself.

As I understood it this small sampling was legal and acceptable, but upon further reading, of Tapscott & Williams, I now understand the real situation. And it makes sense that a few seconds of sounds would be infringement as the drumbeat is a repeated sound, the looping is part of the original music. Use 2 seconds over and over and it becomes three or four minutes of copying pure and simple.

The mashup I created for YouTube had some longer samples than just the 2 seconds obviously but as I see it 2 seconds or 20 seconds didn’t matter, the problem was still the same, the duration didnt matter. And the mashup just becomes my intellectual property nightmare, and the project gives me the no-feeling.

I have in demos of my work had music and audio mashups of material Ive purchased, and as an accompaniment, more like a dj whos mixing only lasts for the evening, and it has never been embedded into the file. So Im uncomfortable, edgy and not in a good way.

Does anyone else have that feeling? Ya it could be the audio samples I used, or the way its mixed, but I think its because there are copyright questions involved my friend, and I’m so scared.
